Mysterious Baldur's Gate Website Intrigues Fans

A few days ago there was nothing. Then, http://www.baldursgate.com/ sprung to life. The icon of the Lord of Murder and the soaring music that greeted players when they journeyed from Candle Keep to Akthatla and beyond graces the webpage. Clearly related to the all-time great PC game and not a Forgotten Realms book or PNP, something is happening with Bioware’s old school favorite. But what?

Original speculation revolved around a Steam release of the original trilogy, but that’s been put to rest by developers of the game’s original developers.  Cryptic messages on the website imply that the Infinity Engine (used to power D&D games like Baldur’s Gate 1+2, Planescape Torment, and the Icewind Dale Series) will be revamped for the modern age.

It seems unlikely there will be a new BG title.  It would require Bioware to regain the rights to the Forgotten Realms license as well as the Dungeons and Dragons rulesets.  One of the fan speculations which seems most likely is that we might be seeing an iOS release of the series. Baldur’s Gate on the iPad sounds like it could be just the type of big RPG news to deserve its own tantalizing website, right?

Whatever it is, we should know for certain in the next few days. Keep an eye out and we’ll let you know soon.
