Matthew Patrick (aka MatPat), host and owner of popular YouTube channel The Game Theorists, recently visited Pope Francis, and what did he give him? Why, Undertale, of course.
The 29 year-old is known for his deep dive into the lore and mechanics of video games in his internet-famous show, Game Theory, one of several hosted on the channel. The show, going on five years now, has covered everything from deadly hookshot physics in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to the authenticity of racy dating-simulators like HuniePop.
Ranging from silly to serious, the show applies science and logic to what might otherwise be ignored or overlooked. Typically, the focus is on things that are simply thrown away as being “gamey,” nothing more than illogical occurrences that players disregard as a technical limitation or developer oversight (for example: clipping or an out-of-place animation).
But none of that explains why he thought to give Undertale to the Pope. For that, you’ll have to watch The Game Theorists’ newest video above.
