Polish publisher Ultimate Games S.A. announced a far-flung 2023 release date for their freshly revealed whaling simulator, Essex: The Whale Hunter, which is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
From hiring a crew to gutting a whale to selling its bits on the black market, Essex offers players the chance to experience life as imagined in Melville’s c;lassic, Moby Dick. In addition to finding the perfect ship and assembling a stellar, cephalopod-slaughtering crew, players must master the seas to track their quarry down, cram a harpoon into its blowhole, and dismember it with a bucket on deck, all in a vain effort to keep the clean-burning lamp oil business afloat (probably).
In addition to swabbing the decks and chewing on blubber, players may also find themselves battling the elements or escaping desert islands scattered across the Atlantic, providing a grim glimpse into the life of a 19th century up-and-coming businessman in Nantucket.
While it’s still a few years out from seeing dry land, Essex can be whish listed on Steam now, so get to deck with harpoons in hand!
